Moist accepts the challenge with the intention of leaving at the earliest opportunity, but somehow he gets drawn in… The ‘revolution’ here is Moist’s brilliant invention: stamps. Vetinari saves him from the gallows (literally) and offers him a choice: he can take over the failing post office, or walk out the door (into a dark pit). In Going Postal, Moist von Lipwig is a con artist, and one of the best, but he’s still no match for Lord Havelock Vetinari, the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork. I am almost through all the Watch books now (my favourites), and decided to listen to the audiobooks for some of Pratchett’s later ‘industrial revolution’ novels featuring the brilliantly named Moist von Lipwig: Going Postal and Making Money–the latter of which makes this a perfect match for the Money bingo square! (To clarify: I’m reviewing two books, but counting only one of them towards Bingo.) They are perfect palate cleansers for heavier books or for when I just need a good laugh. Continuing on my quest to read through Terry Pratchett’s marvelous Discworld series (why did I not start before two years ago?!).

Charlie has come out of the closet and is the receiver of a lot of hateful jokes about being gay, which is something Oseman was determined to portray as the author had similar experiences. The show and comic is a reflection of the experience of being LGBT+ in school, as both Charlie and Nick attend an all-boys prep academy. Eagle-eyed fans spotted several shots in the trailer that directly mirror panels from the comics. The series is an expanded adaptation of Osemans 2015 novella, Nick and Charlie, although the. Heartstopper is an ongoing young adult LGBTQ+ graphic novel and webcomic series written and illustrated by British author Alice Oseman. Just as he did in Gentlemen (2009), Northrop gets at the core of human nature through masterful pacing. Scotty narrates from a slight remove, lending a deceptively one-dimensional feel to the cast of characters, a Breakfast Club assortment of various stereotypes from jock and goth to bad boy and hot girl. Cell phones die, parents don’t arrive and the snow keeps rising, leaving the marooned students to fend for themselves. Telling them, “I’ll be sort of like your guide through all of this,” Scotty lulls readers into an ordinary morning at school, during which his biggest concern is whether the evening’s game will be cancelled, then hints at the horrific things to come with images of “black smoke and blue skin.” Scotty and his friends Jason and Pete hang out in shop class after early dismissal, sure that Jason’s dad will pick them up. When a nor’easter stalls over New England, the resulting blizzard strands seven teenagers at school for a week. The stage is quickly set for an edge-of-your-seat experience as Scotty, a sophomore varsity hoops player, narrates with a chilling nonchalance even as he makes it clear that at least one person didn’t survive. In reality of course, it's often expediency that leads the police to charge someone of a crime and they will definitely withhold evidence that is prejudicial to their own case. It is the police who bring criminal cases to court and it is as if their honesty in the evidence they present and the certainty that they are presenting all the evidence, is a given. Every government cuts the money paid to solicitors (office) and barristers (court), and every government makes the qualification for legal aid harder and harder to get so that only the extremely rich and the extremely poor can now count on getting a defence in a civil or criminal court. The Secret Barrister is polemic against the system of government that pays lip service to victims of crime or had their civil rights infringed upon, but no money to defend them or put right the wrongs inflicted on them. The British have never recovered from being the foremost empire in the world, the most innovative of societies, the leaders of intellectual thought, the most just and fair. There's futuristic flirting from Kass Morgan and Katharine McGee, a riveting transgender heroine from Meredith Russo, a subway missed connection moment from Jocelyn Davies, and a girl determined to get out of her small town from Ibi Zoboi.
